Purpose:
In accordance with Standard 70 of the 2020 CAATE standards, the athletic trainer should be prepared to evaluate and manage patients with acute conditions including wound care and closure. This requires the athletic trainer to acknowledge the relevance of this education to their professional practice, understand how to properly manage the acute wound and it’s potential closure options, while simultaneously working within their state’s scope of practice and their physician’s directing orders. A successful completion of this course will demonstrate proficient knowledge in the area of wound care and closure techniques.*
*Proficiency in the application of suturing techniques is not provided with this course. This proficiency is only available through the additional workshop component where techniques are demonstrated and practiced live.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Independently describe the stages of wound healing and cellular physiology occurring during each stage, especially in how it applies to the understanding needed for application of suturing techniques.
- Properly determine minor skin wounds that are appropriate and inappropriate for suturing, including those that may be better suited for wound adhesives or tapes.
- Accurately choose wounds that need surgical referral, as they are either inappropriate for suturing techniques or outside the scope of practice for the athletic trainer
- Individually list suitable procedures, and materials needed for wound preparation, suturing, and aftercare of a wound.
- Attendees will be prepared for future practical suturing labs/workshops.
